Brief Introduction of Jiangsu Institute of Poultry Sciences

Jiangsu Institute of Poultry Sciences, was established in 1959 as a non-profit and public research institution. It is located in Yangzhou city, Jiangsu province, and covers a total area about 700,000 m² (including 20,000 m² of laboratory area and 150,000 m² of test site construction area) and owns more than 400 laboratory test instruments worthy about 120 million Yuan (RMB). PI-CAAS owns the assets of nearly 500 million Yuan (RMB). PI-CAAS is mainly engaged in poultry genetic resources conservation, poultry breeding and reproduction, poultry breed performance evaluation and inspection, prevention and treatment for major diseases of poultry, poultry industry information service and decision-making consulting, etc.

PI-CAAS has 144 faculty and staff, and among them, 120 are researchers, including 29 professors and 56 associate professors. The PI-CAAS employs 66 famous scientists in the field, including one national technology innovation leaders, some received special government allowance, outstanding young agricultural scientist of the ministry of agriculture, provincial-level outstanding contributions of young and middle-aged experts, provincial “six talent peaks” experts, and provincial “333 project” training objects. Several experts hold the positions of the presidents or general secretaries in national academies and associations. The institute is chairman unit of the State and Provincial Poultry Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance, and is affiliated to Poultry Science Association Secretariat of Chinese Association of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine.

PI-CAAS continuously optimizes the support system for scientific and technological innovation, and has distinguished itself in 11 major research areas: public basic research, quality security and processing, information engineering, poultry resource protection and evaluation, layer breeding and production, broiler breeding and production, waterfowl breeding and production, special poultry breeding and production, poultry disease prevention and control, environmental control and facilities and poultry feed and nutrition. During the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” period, nearly 300 scientific research projects were undertaken, including the national key research and development project, national special project for industrial technology system and natural science foundation of China, etc. By the end of 2023, more than 160 scientific and technological achievements were obtained from the state, ministry, provincial and municipal level, 180 patents were granted, and 31 national and industry standards and 38 local standards were formulated. 12 poultry cross lines were approved by National Commission for Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources or Jiangsu province.

China”, “Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Poultry Genetics & Breeding”, “Center for Efficiency Test and Safety Evaluation of Additives ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, P. R. China”, “Poultry Health Pharmaceuticals Engineering Research Centre of Jiangsu Province”, “China Poultry” magazine, “Guide to Chinese Poultry” magazine, “China Poultry Information Net” and “China Domestic Animal Genetic Resources Dynamic Information Net”.

In recent years, PI-CAAS continues to strengthen international academic exchanges and collaboration with many universities and agricultural research institutes in the United States, Netherlands, Russia and other countries in promoting poultry resources conservation, disease-resistant breeding, and molecular biology technology, etc.

PI-CAAS emphasizes the importance on the transformation of scientific and technological achievements and attach importance to serving the "three rural". A long-term cooperative relationship with large-scale poultry enterprises has been established, and 20 research stations have been used to promote new technology development through extension, breeding training, technology services, technical exchanges and other activities. In addition, the institute actively participates in “Science and Technology Special Commissioner Project”, “Technology Support Project” in Jiangsu province and “Jiangsu Rural Science and Technology Service Supermarket Construction”and provides technical support for rural revitalization and high quality development of the poultry industry.
